You have many options if you are considering a trip to the Caribbean. The region is made up of more than 700 islands, and each one has a distinctive flair and feel that is entirely its own. Because of their location near the equator, the islands enjoy warm weather all year, making them an ideal place for visitors to escape the cold at home. Try one or more of these six amazing destinations to make the most of your vacation.
Cozumel
Cozumel is a small Mexican island located in the Caribbean Sea. it boasts beautiful, sandy beaches that are perfect for lounging. If that isn’t your thing, consider snorkeling or scuba diving to see the amazing life under the tranquil blue waters. You’ll quickly see why Cozumel is a premier diving destination.
For local insight, consider hiring one of the island’s tour guides. You can jump in a jeep for some off-road adventures or head out to see on a boat tour. Either way, you’ll likely see parts of the island you would miss without your knowledgeable guide.
Grand Cayman
Grand Cayman is known for its pristine beaches, so pack lots of sunscreen and plan to relax if this is your destination. Stay at one of the luxury resorts near Seven Mile Beach, so you are right in the heart of the action.
While on the island, stop at the Cayman Turtle Centre to see cool exhibits and learn about native sea turtles. Originally started as a turtle farm, it is now a hub for research and conservation on the island.
Belize
If you love spending time outdoors without lounging on a beach, consider a stay in Belize. The tiny country is part of Central America, not an island, but is widely considered part of the Caribbean. You can visit Mayan ruins, check out underwater scenery at the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, and then pick up a one-of-a-kind painting from one of the street vendors.
If all these destinations seem great so far, consider embarking on a western Caribbean cruise. You’ll have a chance to visit multiple island destinations without the hassle of taking inter-island planes. Plus, you can stay onboard and relax if you start to feel like you need a break from your adventures.
Dominica
Another great destination for adventure seekers, Dominica has a wealth of rainforests, volcanos, and beaches within its borders. While there, hike in Morne Trois Pitons National Park and visit the Boiling Lake. This natural body of water is heated by volcanic activity that causes it to bubble and steam.
History buffs will appreciate a visit to Fort Shirley in Cabrits National Park. Built during the French and Indian War, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is also the location of the famous 8th West India Regiment revolt in 1802.
St. Maarten/ Saint-Martin
This island offers the unique opportunity to visit two countries at once. The island is divided into two sides: the French St. Martin in the north and the Dutch St. Maarten in the south. Each one has its own culture and traditions, so be sure to visit both while you are here.
A few places that are worth checking out include:
- The Shops on Front Street
- Topper’s Rhum Distillery
- Rainforest Adventures
- Mullet Bay Beach
Anguilla
Anguilla is an excellent beach destination, so relax and spend a day or two lounging at Rendezvous Bay. If the sand gets to be too boring, climb aboard a sailing charter for a day on the water. Be sure to visit the Heritage Museum to learn more about the island’s history and culture.
Despite its tiny geographic size, Anguilla has an active art scene. Stop in the galleries to see works by local artists and maybe find the perfect accent for your home.
From Anguilla to St. Maarten, these Caribbean destinations beckon visitors with their sandy beaches, clear blue waters, and laid-back atmosphere. Visit one or, if you can’t decide, try a cruise that allows you to see several destinations in a single trip.
