Checklist For When Moving To A New Home

Checklist For When Moving To A New Home

Everyone should have a checklist for moving to a new home. It doesn’t matter how well organized you are, and it’s a good idea to have a checklist. With that said, here is what should be included in your checklist.

1. Take Care Of Utilities

One of the first things you should do is take care of your utilities. Think about things such as your water, electricity, and gas utilities. These are all utilities you’ll want to transfer as soon as possible. Nobody wants to arrive at their new home and not be able to turn the lights on, cook or use the heating/cooling system.

It’s important to note that you notify the utilities’ companies as soon as you know when moving to your new home. If it’s the busy season, some utilities might be working with a lot more customers than usual. As a general rule of thumb, you should give utility companies at least 3-4 weeks’ notice.

2. Change Your Address

Don’t forget to change your address. Too many people forget to do this until the very last minute. The reason why you don’t want to wait to change your address is that it can take a while before the post office updates everything, which means that in the meantime, mail might still go to your old address.

The good news is changing your address is incredibly easy to do. You can do it online or head over to the nearest post office and do it in-person. Whatever you decide to do, update your address when you know the exact date you are moving or when you know you have obtained ownership of the new home, or you’re moving into your rental.

3. Hire Movers

One of the most important relocation advice can be to hire movers. Research a few moving companies and compare their prices, the types of services they offer, and what their past customers are saying about them. In general, compare at least 3-4 moving companies before you decide which one to hire. Remember, the cheapest mover isn’t always the best, which is why comparing several and choosing professionals like Brooklyn movers.

4. Internet & Cable

You’ll want to schedule an appointment with an internet and cable provider. You’ll want to let them know when you’re going to be moving into the property, and hopefully, they can hook everything up on the day you move or shortly afterward. The chances are you rely on the internet for something, and you enjoy watching cable, so it’s important to know that you won’t be without either when you do move.

On that note, you might not be able to have the same cable and internet provider. Contact the company you currently use and ask if they serve the area, you’ll be moving to. If they do, then that’s good news. If they don’t, you’ll want to research different cable and internet companies in the new area.

5.  Find Veterinarians For Your Pets

Do you have pets? If so, then you’ll want to locate the nearest veterinarian to your new home or find a veterinarian you don’t mind driving to or traveling to. If your pet gets sick or needs regular check-ups, then you’ll want to know where they can go. This is why researching veterinarians a few weeks before you move is important.

6. Pack Belongings

Without a doubt, the most stressful thing about moving is packing your belongings. The first thing you want to do is make a checklist of all your items that will be going with you, and a checklist of things that you don’t wish to, as well as a list of belongings you’ll put in storage. Only bring the items you need and only store items you know you do not want to get rid of because many people store items they don’t want, but they can’t bring themselves to junk them.

Moving to a new home is stressful, and the last thing you want is to forget to do the essential stuff. This is why you’ll want to make sure you reference the above checklist when the time comes. Doing so will make things a lot easier and will help the move go more smoothly.
