Stages – Explained
Pre urban housing
This refers to the early way of dwellings of the people who lived in our world. They were very basic and cultural. In those days, caves were accepted as a place for living because not much work is required, and mostly everything was ready. In areas where there were no caves, living places were constructed using the available things around them.
Ephemeral Dwellings
This kind was a typical living place for nomadic people, and it can also be called a “transient dwelling.” Examples of such societies include the African Bushman and the Australian aborigines. This type of living took place only for a few days.
Episodic Dwellings
Episodic Dwellings are meant to be a temporary living place for all those who are in need. Example: Very strong tents, igloos, etc. The groups that live here tend to be more specialised and skilled than the Ephemeral dwellers. Slash and burn cultivation, and communal housing is practised more than fishing, hunting, etc. They make effective use of the cropland.
Periodic Dwellings
They are a temporary but regular place to live for a group of people. Nomadic tribal communities mostly live here. This type illustrates the next level of housing types. These groups of people are more dependent on crops and plants more than livestock for food. They practised agriculture more than hunting.
Seasonal Dwellings
One can derive the meaning of this type from its name. We can understand that Seasonal Dwellings are more like the correct place to live according to the seasons. In North America, this kind of housing is found in diverse areas. Kenya and Tanzania also have a similar type of housing.
Semi-permanent Dwellings
People who practice agriculture will make use of these semi-permanent dwelling places. The groups that live here tend to stay for a longer period of time according to the land and resources that have to be taken care of. It is said that Americans and Indians followed this kind.
Permanent Dwellings
Sedentary agricultural societies used this type of livelihood. Agriculture is still a primary occupation. People who lived here were agriculturalists and made the cropland their permanent living place and made their lives out here. Early examples of these houses can be found in English cottages, like,
- Kent cottages
- Cornwall
- Suffolk
